The 40th Perceptual Frontier Seminar: Perception and Design

Date and time: Friday, 8 June 2018, 10:00-12:00
Venue: Room 411 on the 1st Floor of Building 4, Ohashi Campus, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan <http://www.design.kyushu-u.ac.jp/kyushu-u/english/access>
Language: English
Organizers: Joao P. CABRAL and Yesaya Tommy PAULUS (Kyushu Univ.)

Program

1. Personal constructs for design: The evaluation grid method and the image grid method
Naoyuki OI* and Hironobu TAKAHASHI**
*Kyushu University/ReCAPS, **Kumamoto Prefectural University

The present investigation focuses on developing the image grid method to clarify the concept of "health" and "healthy environment," based on the repertory grid test and the evaluation grid method, which have been used for eliciting personal constructs from participants. 6 categories of constructs for healthy environment, i.e., physical exercise, dining, bath, hobby and relaxation, sleep, and positive thinking were successfully extracted. It was revealed that the personal constructs consisted of at least 3 aspects, human relationship, evaluation of a specific environment, and preferable behavior settings for a concept, and that a suitable object should be specified for each method.

2. A Preliminary Study of Grid Densities for Visual Password Formats

Participant judgments (n = 27) were obtained about what grid densities could be potentially useful and safe for the
formation of visual passwords on a screen. Sixteen grid densities, ranging from 2 × 2 to 7 × 7 cells (rows-by-columns), were used for three visual password formats (i.e., an alphanumeric, a pattern, and a picture format). The preliminary judgments suggest that grid densities ranging from 3 × 3 to 6 × 6 cells could be useful for visual password formation and authentication using eye tracking.

3. The perception of auditory icons by Japanese drivers
Joao P. CABRAL* and Gerard B. REMIJN **
*Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan
**Department of Human Science/Research Center for Applied Perceptual Science, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan

Auditory icons are short, one-shot sound messages that need to convey accurate information about an event or situation. Utilizing automotive/traffic related auditory icons previously studied in Europe and the USA, a study on the perception of auditory icons by Japanese drivers was conducted. The results show that ubiquitous sounds (bells, sirens, and voices) were most of the time interpreted similarly by participants, but less well-known icons were described by a larger variety of words.
