The 44th Perceptual Frontier Seminar

Date and time: Monday, 7 January 2019, 16:40-18:10
Venue: Room 321 on the 2nd Floor of Building 3, Ohashi Campus, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan <http://www.design.kyushu-u.ac.jp/kyushu-u/english/access>
Language: English
Organizer: Gerard B. REMIJN (Kyushu Univ./ReCAPS)

Program

1. Spatial Audio Impact on the Perception of Visual Content in Audiovisual Reproduction
Presenter: Viktoria Korshunova (Sound in New Media Program, Signal Processing and Acoustics Department, Aalto University, Finland)
Supervisors: Catarina Mendonça - Marie-Sklodowska Curie Fellow / Adjunct Professor / Ph.D.; Advisor: Archontis Politis - Post-doctoral Researcher; Advisor: Javier Gómez Bolaños - Ph.D)

Abstract: Investigation and analysis of the Spatial audio impact(mono, stereo, 5.1, 7.1.4) on the perception of the visual content in audio-visual reproduction by using 360° immersive short film called “Ego Cure”. Participants were watching 5-30 sec movie scenes and answering the questions afterwards while wearing the eye-tracking device Tobii Pro Glasses 2. The experimental paradigm consisted of divided/selective attention, speech intelligibility and event detection tasks.

2. Antedating of Visual Experiences after Eye Blinks
Presenter: Takuya Kishida, Kyushu University
Supervisor: Hiroyuki Ito

Abstract: Visual experiences continue across eye blinks despite lacking visual information for more than one hundred milliseconds. We measured the perceived timing of visual stimuli which physically inputted after voluntarily eye blinking, by an audio-visual temporal order judgement task. Present results suggested that perceptual timing of a visual event antedates when observers see the visual event immediately after their eye blink.

3. A study on sound development of Japanese-learning infants
Presenter: Emi Shibato, Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University.
Supervisor: Yoshitaka Nakajima

Abstract: In the present study, we investigate when canonical babbling starts and what kind of speech sounds are articulated by using an auditory method. To examine this issue, we used the sounds of 3, 8, and 12 months of five Japanese-learning infants.

4. A Factor Analysis of Phonetic Category Boundaries
Presenter: Xiaoyang Yu, Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University.
Supervisor: Yoshitaka Nakajima

Abstract: The present study was on how spectral-change factors behave in phonetic category boundaries. Four factors representing the acoustic characteristics of English speech appeared. The internal structure of phonetic category boundaries might be clarified by the spatial distribution of the factor scores.
